The Great Port City (يافا)

Once the epicentre of the Palestinian economy, the people of Yafa built their city on one major trade, citrus groves, and in particular, the world renowned Yafa Orange. By the 1930s, Yafa was exporting tens of millions of citrus crates to the rest of the world, earning the city an important place in the global economy. With its success, the city proliferated with new businesses; from banks and shipping firms, to numerous factories producing glass, metal, textiles, sweets and more.

However, with the declaration of the establishment of the State of Israel, Zionist military forces forcibly displaced 95% of Yafa’s indigenous Arab Palestinian population. In an instant, the people of Yafa lost everything their city, their families, their homes, and their entire way of life. Today, approximately 700,000 Palestinian refugees trace their roots to Yafa, making up about one-tenth of the overall Palestinian refugee population.

Yafa’s ongoing Nakba is a story of transformation from a thriving modern urban center to a marginalized population facing poverty, discrimination, gentrification, crime, and the demolition of their homes. From the mass expulsion of 1948 to the present day, the people of Yafa continue to endure the legacy of their dispossession.

The vibrant blue zigzag pattern against a deep black backdrop evokes the serenity of the city’s seaside and the sweeping views of the Mediterranean coastline. This authentic Palestinian Keffiyeh embodies the spirit of Yafa (يافا), meaning "beauty" in Canaanite, and honors the city’s legacy as the largest in historic Palestine before the 1948 Nakba. Light and Sturdy, Can be used for Sun Coverage and for Light Warming

Oh, tread lightly on this one …One of my favorite items of apparel. It is both light to keep cool in the sun and slightly warm in the cold.Obviously it can be politically frought- I am not getting into that aspect.But the quality is great. The size is good for a floofy scarf, head covering, etc.

I love this kufiya! The style and quality of this garment are excellent. I have several kufiyas from this store, and it turns out that the black background patterns complement my skin and wardrobe better than the white ones do, so I recommend people experiment with several styles if they can. Thank you!!!

This pairs well with many of my white, blue or black outfits. Also worth mentioning that depending which side you show, the pattern will look different, making it easy to switch up your look slightly. In particular I love the subtle nearly-black look when I choose to flip it 'inside out'. Like any Kufiya it's also a nice way to protect my neck from the sun. This is a versatile article of clothing, and I'll incorporate it into both my music festival outfits and everyday wear.

I am so proud to own this beautiful Keffiyeh. It means so much to me to hold something in my hands that has been crafted in Palestine. Top quality craftsmanship using lovely light, but strong, threads. I love how transparent it is when you hold it up to the light, but is strong and warm too. The patterns are woven so beautifully and the edging and corner tassels add a real touch of class. As an Irish person, it’s important to me to show my support for the Palestinian people. I highly recommend this top quality product.
