Land of the Glorious (غزة)

In 1948, 200,000 Palestinians sought refuge in Gaza, representing roughly a quarter of those who fled or were forcibly expelled from their homes. Brutally besieged by Israel and blockaded on all sides, Gaza’s Palestinian population endures in a marginal area that holds a central place in Palestinian history. Internationally recognized as an “indirectly occupied” territory, Gaza’s air and maritime space, land crossings, imports, exports, water, electricity, telecommunications, and other utilities are all controlled by Israel. Israel reserves the right to enter Gaza at will with its military and maintains a no-go buffer zone within the territory.

Since 2000, over 3,000 Palestinian children have died, most of them Gazan boys and girls who have endured up to four sieges in their lifetimes. As of 2021, over 50% of Gazans are unemployed, and half of the population lives in poverty. In the face of such darkness, the inner fire of the Gazan people, and their unyielding desire for freedom, have repeatedly captured the hearts of the international community. Perhaps more than any other Palestinian community, Gaza’s endurance remains a beacon of sustained hope for all those who confront apartheid head-on.
