Represented in vibrant blue, yellow, green, and purple, the city of Bisan (بيسان), Canaanite for “home of gods”, resides at the junction of the Jordan River and luscious Jezreel Valleys. Though the indigenous Palestinian population were forced to flee the town during the Nakba, memories survive of a city famous for its water springs, green fields, and banana plantations, the lively cinema, the bustling train station, and the first Palestinian agricultural high school for girls, and so too remains the dream of return. This authentic keffiyeh, a traditional Palestinian shemagh made in Palestine, keeps the hope of return alive and reminds us of the enchanting city of Bisan.

Home of the Gods

Bisan, known in Canaanite as “home of the gods”—once thrived at the meeting of the Jordan River and Jezreel Valley, blessed with flowing springs, green fields, and fragrant banana groves. For millennia it was a crossroads of civilizations, its stones whispering of Egyptian pharaohs Seti I and Ramesses II, whose steles still tell of the city’s spiritual and strategic power. In the early 20th century, Bisan bustled with life: a lively cinema, a busy train station, and the first Palestinian agricultural high school for girls. Muslims, Christians, and a small Jewish minority shared its streets, its markets ringing with laughter and trade.

That harmony was shattered in 1948, when Zionist forces captured Bisan during Operation Gideon. Its Palestinian inhabitants were expelled, their homes emptied but their memories alive. The lush fields and voices faded into exile, but the longing for return never dimmed.

Today, the Bisan Keffiyeh carries that memory. Its bold blues, yellows, greens, and purples recall the vibrance of the town that once was. Each thread is a piece of Bisan’s soul—its rivers, orchards, and steadfast people. To wear it is to keep alive the promise that the story of Bisan is not over.

It is an honour to wear this beautiful Kufiya. I have saved all the loose threads, and plan to combine them with threads from my own embroidery, to make a tribute to your art and your resistance, and our collective humanity. From the River To the sea, with love from Scotland.

I always love the colors and varieties of kuffiyehs… thank you! Mine did begin to unravel from the tassels at arrival (shown on image). I’m not picky so It’s all 5s for me because it’s beautiful all the same! FREE YOUUUUU!!!

Fabric is soft to the touch, and it helps me through hot days and cold nights alike. Strips in the patterning are white, instead of the deeper blue shown in the product pictures. Nevertheless, this kufiya is nicely vibrant and goes well with a lot. Threads in the stitching catch and pull easily on things, so be careful with it. Even though it arrived within a month of my order, I'd more than gladly wait as long as needed! Quite a wonderful kufiya overall.
